REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE: THE 3 R’S

REDUCE

  • Buy items with little or no packaging
  • Buy items that come in recyclable packaging
  • Avoid buying items packaged in Styrofoam or other non-enviornmentally friendly packaging
  • Buy concentrated products that can be mixed and come in refillable containers
  • Carry your own “reusable” cloth or paper bags
  • Carry your own lunchbox or coffee mugs to work or school
  • Be a proactive shopper: Think about your purchases and the recyclable qualities of each product you buy. What will happen to the packaging when you are through with it? Can it be recycled or will it end up in the trash?

REUSE

  • Use products that can be reused e.g. cloth diapers, napkins, towels, rags, or bags
  • Use both sides of paper when making copies
  • Reuse envelopes for scratch paper or making lists
  • Mend clothes and repair broken appliances versus buying new
  • Purchase items at garage sales, second-hand shops, or junk yards

RECYCLE

  • Participate in your local curbside or drop-off recycling programs
  • Remember virtually everything can be recycled or reused
  • Make recycling a challenge and strive for excellence in recycling
  • Remember you can recycle tires, oil, oil filters antifreeze, household hazardous waste, appliances, yardwaste, books, batteries, electronics, scrap metal, printer cartridges, and lightbulbs
